What is coaching

What is coaching? Part 2: Clients share their viewpoints

Coaching is often misunderstood. It’s not about offering quick fixes or giving ready-made solutions. Instead, it’s a deeply personal journey designed to help you unlock your potential and discover the answers within yourself.

In this article, we explore the stories of three recent Human Element coaching clients who have experienced this transformative process.

The essence of coaching: A personalised, collaborative process

For many, coaching is an eye-opening experience. “Coaching has helped me unlock my potential, clarify my goals, and work toward achieving them,” says Michael, a client who has worked with a coach to gain clarity in his career. “It’s not about giving you answers, but helping you find your own through guided conversations and thought-provoking questions.”

Before starting coaching, Michael had reservations. “I was worried about whether the coach would fully understand my challenges,” he admits. He also felt unsure about sharing his personal thoughts. “Opening up to a stranger can feel intimidating. But as the sessions progressed, I realised that the coaching process was designed to be safe and supportive.”

Michael’s understanding of coaching transformed as he experienced it. “I realised that coaching is a collaborative and personalised process,” he shares. “The coach doesn’t give you all the answers; they guide you to find them yourself. It’s not about solving your problems, but empowering you to solve them with greater self-awareness and insight.”

The power of being heard: A sacred space for reflection

Jessica, another client, explains coaching in a way that underscores its emotional depth: “Coaching is an experience I wish everyone could have at least once in their life. It’s not just about guidance, tools, and a personalised structure; it’s about being truly heard. A coach listens deeply, with no judgment, and gently helps you uncover the barriers holding you back—some of which you might not even be aware of.”

Jessica’s experience of coaching was transformative. She found that coaching created a sacred, safe space where she could untangle the whirlwind of thoughts in her mind and reconnect with her inner self. “In that vulnerability lies magic. That’s often where the most profound answers are waiting to be discovered,” she reflects. “Coaching has helped me create harmony between who I am on the inside and how I show up in the world.”

Like many, Jessica had doubts before starting coaching. “I was sceptical and doubtful about its value,” she admits. “How could someone who didn’t know me or my daily life genuinely guide me?” Over time, Jessica realised that coaching was not about someone telling her what to do but about empowering her to navigate her own path. “The coach doesn’t lead the way—they simply guide and support you in finding your own path.”

A life-changing experience: Personal growth beyond professional skills

Thandi, another client, shares a perspective that underscores the profound personal nature of coaching. “Coaching is a life-changing experience. It’s a process of healing, of finding yourself again,” she says. Before starting coaching, Thandi wasn’t sure what to expect. “I knew that hard work was involved, but I didn’t realise it would be this deep.”

Coaching revealed to Thandi that it’s not just about learning work skills. “Coaching helps you heal from the inside and provides you with a better understanding of why you behave a certain way in specific situations,” she explains. “It raises awareness and helps you identify the triggers. When you understand those triggers, you can change the outcome.”

One of the most significant transformations Thandi experienced was the ability to let go of external pressures. “For the first time in my life, I was able to truly let go of the ‘worldly’ expectations I felt were placed on me,” she shares. “I was trying to be a super employee, super mum, super wife—super everything—and I was breaking apart. Through coaching, I was able to get in touch with who I am and what truly matters to me.”

In her professional life, Thandi discovered the power of taking a step back. “I used to dive headfirst into situations without taking time to assess them,” she says. “Coaching taught me to step back, evaluate, and then communicate clearly. This shift has had a significant impact on how I approach my work.”

Freedom, confidence, and the power of self-acceptance

For Jessica, coaching was not just a tool for professional growth but also a path to personal freedom. “When I started coaching, I wanted to become more confident and productive. Along the way, I discovered that I had always been confident. It was fear and self-doubt that had convinced me otherwise.”

Through coaching, Jessica was able to replace self-imposed negativity with self-acceptance. “It felt like breathing fresh air after unknowingly living in a polluted space,” she reflects. “That’s why I call it freedom—realising that the barriers holding me back were ones I had built myself. Once those walls came down, I found the confidence to embrace failure as part of growth.”

Jessica’s coaching journey revealed that what she had perceived as failure was actually courage in action. “Now, I feel liberated and more confident, knowing that I hold the power to define my own success and happiness,” she says.

The transformative nature of coaching: A deep dive into self-awareness

The common thread running through these three experiences is the transformative power of coaching to uncover deeper layers of self-awareness, growth, and change. Through coaching, individuals like Michael, Jessica, and Thandi have been able to explore not just their professional lives but also their personal values, strengths, and limiting beliefs.

What makes coaching so unique is its ability to create a space for reflection, deep questioning, and self-discovery. It’s a process that empowers individuals to move from a place of uncertainty or limitation to one of clarity, confidence, and purpose. The insights gained through coaching continue to resonate long after the sessions have ended, creating lasting shifts that ripple through every aspect of life.

The gift of coaching

At its core, coaching is about empowerment. It is about giving individuals the tools, space, and support they need to uncover their own answers, make intentional decisions, and live more fulfilling lives. The stories shared by Michael, Jessica, and Thandi highlight the significant impact coaching can have, both personally and professionally.

As Jessica beautifully put it, “Coaching equips you with effective tools and techniques that gradually help you realise you’ve had the answers all along. The coach is simply there to guide you until you no longer need them. You discover that you were the GPS the entire time, capable of navigating your own journey.”

Coaching is not a quick fix, nor is it a one-size-fits-all solution. It is a deeply personal journey, one that offers lasting growth and transformation. The process may not always be easy, but the rewards are undeniable. In the end, coaching helps you become the best version of yourself, empowered to navigate life’s challenges and embrace your full potential.
